What is the Metaverse?

The metaverse is a term initially used in the novel “Snow Crash” in the 1990s to describe a futuristic view of virtual reality. Since then, it has become a popular term referring to current and future integrated digital platforms that focus on virtual reality.

The vision for the metaverse is a continuity of digital immersion. From the data collected by social media and tech companies, this technology makes it possible for immersion experiences on reality headsets, digital glasses, smartphones, online games, and more.

How will the Metaverse transform business?

While the metaverse will touch every aspect of our lives – including how we live and socialize – its impact on business is tangible. Whether they work on-site or remotely, employees will be represented in the digital world through customized avatars which they will use to interact with customers and colleagues. Teams will be able to collaborate in a room with a virtual whiteboard, meet up with colleagues from around the world ‘in-person’, or catch up around the virtual watercooler. The metaverse will also amplify training and reskilling opportunities with immersive virtual learning environments that are engaging for learners. While we are just beginning to scratch the surface, the opportunities and potential are endless.

How will users access the Metaverse?

  • Google was one of the first companies to launch augmented reality glasses. This technology allows users by voice and motion to control Android devices to display information directly in the user’s length or field of view.
  • Amazon has created a VR Kiosk allowing shoppers to see the product they want to buy from a 360° angle. While wearing VR glasses, shoppers experience going to a store, trying on clothes, opening, and closing furniture, and interacting with the product as if they were seeing it in person.

What are the benefits of the Metaverse?

The metaverse removes the dependence on the internet and merges the physical and virtual worlds. It allows businesses to:

  • Explore new ways of working, learning, and connecting with colleagues.
  • Create more personalized, secure, and collaborative working methods.
  • Design, develop, maintain, and monetize digital assets.
  • Work, learn, interact, shop, and engage with the world and people.
