success story

US public transport giant enhances the overall efficiency by 40% through turnkey operations

with Virtusa’s cloud migration and managed services on AWS cloud

In these unprecedented times, logistics and transportation companies must embrace innovation by aligning their strategies to the new-age digital technologies in the marketplace.

As a strategic technology partner for a large public transport corporation in the US, Virtusa assisted in building an end-to-end roadmap for cloud assessment, migration, and support. We enabled the client to move their two datacenters to AWS cloud while securely enhancing operational efficiency.

The Challenge

Our client had the vision to be a technology agnostic corporation.

They were incurring heavy maintenance costs in managing the IT infrastructure at two data centers running on a Windows workload environment. The major problems were security, accessibility, and scalability along with cost which was increasing every day.

The client was looking for a partner who could turn their challenges to derive better business value. With a meticulous approach to cloud migration and managed services, Virtusa was the preferred partner. Virtusa collaborated with the client to migrate their operations entirely out of the existing data centers into a reimagined framework on AWS cloud.

The Solution

Seamless migration of client data centers to AWS cloud with a strategic approach in a phased manner.

Virtusa’s 3-phase cloud migration methodology and end-to-end execution approach gave us a competitive advantage, making us a prominent choice for being an innovative partner. Virtusa laid a phased approach for the migration process as below:

The first phase was majorly pre-planning and assessment. We initiated with a large number of applications and after detailed assessment using TOGAF-based EA Architecture modeling and SaaS-based tooling, we qualified 37 applications with ‘Lift and Shift’ approach and more than 50 applications for the second phase with a detailed roadmap and migration strategy.

The second phase involved finalizing target state design architecture and migration and validation. We built the IT Asset fact base with Automated discovery and designed the architecture model using Insight-EA. We combined Virtusa’s proven BCM approach with Insight-EA’s rich business and IT asset modeling capability, which enabled us to manage the complex business and IT transformation.

The third phase was Go Live with managed services activation, including service initialization to discovery, deployment, readiness, and closure. Virtusa managed services for this project included tools such as ServiceNow, Solarwinds, AWS, and Terraform. Currently, our team is providing ongoing support to AWS cloud for up to 3 years to ensure smooth functioning.

A few focus areas during the entire process was designed to:

  • Minimize risk throughout the whole process
  • Add velocity and scalability during migration
  • Produce high-quality results within time and budget
  • Make transitioning and cutover to the cloud efficiently & effectively
  • Leveraging the economies of scale with lower variable cost
AWS Cloud Migration Solution
The Benefit

Delivering efficiency and scalability with Virtusa’s state-of-the-art migration services to AWS cloud.

We managed the end-to-end execution of the migration process with the help of Automated IaC (Infrastructure-as-code) or infrastructure tasks using Terraform Blueprints. This increased the efficiency of the entire process as it allowed the safe and manageable provision of repeated infrastructure. Our team created faster instances in multiple environments using Baseline AMIs. The key benefits include:

  • 40% increase in operational efficiency
  • Reducing the turnaround time
  • Improved security
  • Dynamic Cloud Disaster Recovery (CDR)
  • High availability and scale on demand
