Elevating Aecon’s infrastructure through seamless cloud transition

Hear why Aecon Group Inc., a national Canadian construction and infrastructure development company chose Virtusa as their partner to migrate their SAP and Non-SAP servers to Amazon Web Services (AWS) using the Lift, Shift, and Optimize approach.

The Challenge
  • Perform Lift and Shift migration with technical upgrades, where necessary, with the primary goal of migrating all SAP and Non-SAP workloads to the AWS cloud for data center closure.
  • Migrate all virtual machines - 90% Microsoft and 10% Red Hat.
  • Upgrade operating systems (OS) and database stacks, where necessary.
  • Automate environment build using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for efficient infrastructure provisioning.
  • AWS Directory Service must be a primary authentication platform for Windows OS and single sign-on (SSO) for SAP applications.
  • Moving out from Managed Shared infrastructure to an autonomous structure is quite complex.
The Solution
  • Performed discovery using Virtusa accelerators and the client's asset inventory.
  • Virtusa created a design, architecture, and migration plan along with a project road map.
  • Created IaC with Terraform, AWS Launch Wizard for SAP, and integrated with AWS native DevOps tools for automated provisioning of the infrastructure.
  • Upgraded and migrated Windows Server 2008/2012, MS SQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and IIS Web Server to the latest versions.
  • Leveraging the AWS Landing Zone Accelerator at the initial stage was the right option for Cloud adoption.
  • Leveraging 100% Cloud native solutions.
Transforming infrastructure
AWS services used:
  • Amazon EC2: For hosting the application and database services.
  • AWS Directory Service: For providing the Directory services.
  • AWS Network Firewall: For centrally managing firewall rules across all accounts and applications.
  • Amazon S3: For storage or back-up.
  • AWS CodeCommit: For CI/CD pipeline.
  • AWS Launch Wizard for SAP: For deploying SAP Services.
The Benefit
  • 60% reduction in provisioning time due to the automation of AWS infrastructure and deployment.
  • 50% reduction in operational costs by opting for Infrastructure as Code (IaC) approach.
  • 30% reduction in infrastructure and maintenance costs.
  • Ability to stand up the disaster recovery environment with AWS Backup and AWS Backint Agent in 50% less time than the current RTO.
  • A visible increase in application performance and user experience.
  • Upgrade to a newer operating system and database version resulted in significant risk reduction.
