Leading UK-based pharmaceutical company achieves 300% improvement in COVID-19 screening process using high-end data and process integration solution

Rapid COVID-19 screening and accurate verification facilities are critical to safeguard employees and ensure business continuity at pharmaceutical manufacturing units. Virtusa’s automated screening solution helped one of the largest pharma companies to respond quicker to the crisis while enabling continuity to drug manufacturing.

When the potential magnitude of the COVID-19 pandemic became clear in early 2020, pharmaceutical manufacturers around the globe started exploring ways to curb its impact on daily operations.

For our client, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies, manufacturing facilities and the supply chain have been actively engaged in production of medicines even during lockdowns. To enable the R&D unit to function without hiccups and meet business objectives, the client wanted a scalable and efficient screening system to accelerate the screening process for frontline and other medical staff and overcome disruption in operations.

Virtusa partnered with the client to implement a reliable and automated screening system that fast-tracked regular COVID-19 testing for critical employees entering a production site. The solution ensured compliance, improved detection accuracy, and increased security and compliance with government mandates. Our solution helped improve the end-to-end screening time by 300% and ensured seamless operation at the manufacturing sites.

The Challenge

The client had 18000+ frontline staff who needed to undergo regular COVID-19 testing before entering a production site. Without an immediate solution with scalable impact, employees would have had to wait for national testing facilities, delaying daily operations and leading to the suspension of critical medicine production.

Assessing the urgent need to continue business as usual, the client needed to scale up the screening efficiency in manufacturing and other business divisions and support employee family members’ testing. 

With manufacturing operations spread across multiple countries, the organization needed a comprehensive solution that could enable hassle-free, compliant operations per the different government guidelines to meet the crisis needs. 

The Solution

In close collaboration with the client, Virtusa developed the front-end desktop and mobile apps and the back-end solution with Talend data integration.

The solution helps key workers easily register through an app or URL link by entering their personal details and answer questions about COVID-19 symptoms. Via the app, qualified personnel triage the individual with appropriate testing protocols. Employees can choose the screening facility as per their convenience – use an at-home test kit or visit a drive-through testing facility to submit samples for further lab analysis and wait for a mandatory negative result to enter the production site. The solution quickly facilitates the detection of high viral load through rapid antigen tests.

Virtusa’s cloud-based solution used data visualization capabilities of Power BI fuelled by Talend’s data integration, and rapid App-ification capabilities of Power App to deliver a hyper functional app, enabling insights led decision making across the mobile & desktop solution.
