The Data Lead is responsible for the architecture, quality, and governance of the data pipelines supporting Mercer’s Health & Benefits and C&B consulting practices. You will lead a team of data engineers and analysts to transform raw insurance and payroll data into the structured intelligence that powers Mercer’s benchmarking and predictive analytics platforms.
Key Responsibilities
Data Strategy & Architecture: Design and oversee scalable data pipelines (ETL/ELT) that aggregate global healthcare claims, premium data, and multi-country salary surveys.
Domain Integration: Ensure technical alignment between Healthcare datasets (Inpatient/Outpatient costs, Rx trends) and Compensation datasets (Base Pay, STI/LTI, IPE Leveling) to provide a Total Cost of People view.
Data Governance & Security: Enforce strict HIPAA and GDPR compliance protocols. You are responsible for the anonymization and encryption of sensitive PHI and PII throughout the data lifecycle.
Advanced Analytics: Collaborate with Actuaries and Data Scientists to build predictive models for medical inflation, What-if benefits restructuring, and pay-equity audits.
Stakeholder Management: Act as the technical liaison between the Digital Engineering team and Functional SMEs to ensure data models accurately reflect real-world insurance and labor market logic.
Technical Skills & Qualifications
Data Engineering: Expert-level SQL, Python/PySpark, and experience with modern data stack tools (Databricks, Snowflake, or Azure Synapse).
Orchestration: Proficiency in managing complex workflows using Airflow or Azure Data Factory.
Visualization: Strong understanding of how to structure data for high-performance consumption in Power BI or Tableau.
Domain Expertise: 8+ years in Data Management, with a significant background in Healthcare (claims/clinical data) or HR-Tech (Payroll/Total Rewards).
Leadership: 3+ years leading technical teams in an Agile environment.
