The robots take over healthcare

Published: May 17, 2018

Robotic process automation (RPA) is nothing new in healthcare; it has steadily been improving quality of care and delivery of care for years. The evolution of robotics has moved beyond handling measurement and testing needs (an evolution that began well over 100 years ago) and is now in a new wave of information assembly for process improvement.

If you think about how information has historically evolved for patient-centric care, it began with the model of siloed, compartmentalized, and difficult to understand systems ‚ each system perfect for the specific function it intended to support, but not supportive of a holistic model. With the ongoing shift in care to a "whole person‚" or osteopathic medicine model, the time to use robots for process improvement has arrived–it is the era of RPA.

Healthcare depends on information: Accurate, timely, and complete, but also incredibly concise and focused. The sheer volume of information that is available is overwhelming and a tedious exercise for any practitioner to absorb. Robots to the rescue!

Robots are a low-cost information runner with amazing abilities to search out, assemble, and consolidate data, all without complaining about working non-stop day and night. Think of these robots not as the brains. Rather think of them as the food-gathering engine, running around with the sole mission of feeding the brains in the operation, the healthcare provider.

How best to use these brainless wonder? ,"KISS" them. The "Keep It Short and Simple", approach suits them well. While they have the potential to do almost anything you could dream of, asking a robot to go seek out a small slice of information is what they do best. Optimally, you have many robots, each with a unique and single focus. Send these diligent little runners off to return with what is important, and let them leave the rest behind.

A little army of specialized robots can now provide a great wealth of specific information back for use. The magnitude of information in dozens and dozens of healthcare systems is now available as a single source of real-time truth. Robots have accomplished their mission.

Yet, the fact that we have an overabundance of information in a single place only solves half of the problem we presented. This is where the marriage of two solutions into a unified platform was solved through Pegasystems‚ and acquisition of OpenSpan (now branded as Pega Robotics) into their Digital Process Automation (DPA) platform.

Robots have now solved the first part of the puzzle to help you determine where the information resides. With that, the DPA platform is now empowered to address the second part of the problem and do what is does best, present what is needed, concisely, accurately, and most importantly quickly - all in a fashion that is easily understood by the brains of the process that needs it.

This combination leads to a complete family of smart little robots (RPA), feeding the industry-leading DPA solution. This done correctly allows our human client to do what they do best provide patient-focused care.
