Preserving a 134-year-old educational landmark in Mumbai and safeguarding access to learning for future generations

Historic Mumbai school receives UNESCO Asia Pacific Award of Merit for conservation

Virtusa supported the full restoration of the Sir Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Parsee Charitable Institution (BJPCI), a 134-year-old heritage school in Mumbai that provides affordable education to more than 1,500 students annually. The project was recognized with the UNESCO Asia Pacific Award of Merit for Cultural Heritage Conservation, which acknowledged the quality of the restoration work and the effort to preserve the structure’s architectural and cultural significance while keeping it functional as a modern learning environment.

Restoring an institution that has served communities since 1890

The restoration project focused on preserving key architectural features of the BJPCI building while ensuring it remained safe, accessible, and fully equipped to serve students and staff. Improvements were carried out with sensitivity to the building’s historic character, ensuring that the school could continue to operate as a community anchor for affordable education. Through this project, Virtusa supported both heritage preservation and long term educational development in one of Mumbai’s oldest learning institutions.

Creating long-term value for students and the wider community

The restoration has enabled BJPCI to continue delivering quality education to more than 1,500 students each year, many from underserved backgrounds. By maintaining the school's structural integrity and historical identity, the project strengthened access to education while safeguarding a cultural landmark for future generations. This initiative reflects Virtusa’s commitment to community empowerment, cultural stewardship, and the preservation of institutions that hold deep social value.
