A vital water source in need of renewal
The Ranglal Kunta lake restoration project focuses on reviving a degraded urban water body in Hyderabad that serves as an essential groundwater source for surrounding communities. In FY25, Virtusa advanced Phase III of this multi-year effort through a comprehensive set of restoration activities designed to stabilize the lake’s ecology, address pollution, and improve long-term water availability. These interventions form part of Virtusa’s broader commitment to sustainable water management and resilient community infrastructure.
Strengthening the lake’s ecological and physical systems
As part of Phase III, the project team conducted bioremediation, lakebed desilting, and sewage treatment installation to improve water quality and reduce contamination risks. Additional work included constructing entry gates, erecting protective fencing, repairing bunds, clearing overgrown vegetation, and carrying out landscaping to stabilize the shorelines and improve the lake’s ecological health. These actions reinforce the structural integrity of the water body while improving its ability to recharge groundwater aquifers.
Improving groundwater recharge and community resilience
The restoration has delivered both immediate and long-term benefits for local communities. Desilting and hydrological improvements have increased the lake’s percolation rate, strengthened groundwater recharge, and enhanced access to clean water during dry months. Over time, the project is expected to support improved water security, ecosystem regeneration, and greater resilience to climate related water stress. The initiative also contributes to multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals, including clean water, sustainable cities, climate action, and healthy ecosystems.
