AWS re:Invent 2021: Hussain Shabbir

Published: November 3, 2021

After last year’s virtual event, AWS: re:Invent 2021 promises to be bigger and better than ever! As the world’s premier cloud computing experience, the five-day hybrid (in-person and online) event delivers expert sessions, hands-on workshops, and breakout sessions, along with big announcements about new AWS technology. As an AWS Strategic Collaboration Partner and gold sponsor, we look forward to bringing our team of cloud experts to Las Vegas to meet with our customers, partners, and colleagues and showcase Virtusa’s leading-edge cloud capabilities. Our Senior Director for Virtusa’s AWS Center of Excellence, Hussain Shabbir, is heading to the event and meeting with attendees. Here, he shares background on our partnership with AWS and what to expect from the event and discussions with our team.

Virtusa is an AWS Strategic Collaboration Partner—how does this partnership enhance Virtusa’s offerings?

Over the past three and a half years, we’ve accelerated our growth in the AWS space from an internal capability and business and revenue standpoint. As we reached the end of our first three-year term with AWS in August, we’ve gained eight competencies and three delivery designations. We’ve also ramped up our training and certifications. Our team has done roughly 2,500 —so that has been a primary area of focus—to deepen our expertise and become first-class AWS partners to deliver the best business outcomes for our customers.

AWS re:Invent celebrates its 10th year, November 29-December 3, 2021, in Las Vegas. Why is it important for Virtusa to be there? What can attendees expect from the event?

Ten years is an important milestone to celebrate. Re:Invent is an opportunity to meet with our partners, customers, and colleagues to mark three years as a Strategic Collaboration Partner with AWS. After the virtual last year, this year will bring new energy, and we look forward to meeting in person. Thanks to the pandemic, more enterprises are looking to accelerate their digital transformation. We welcome the opportunity to discuss the journey with attendees and how our partnership can transform business.

Why should attendees book a meeting with you at re:Invent?

I head the AWS Center of Excellence at Virtusa, and along with the development of solutions, I have a strong understanding of our offerings. For enterprises looking for a deeper understanding of any of our accelerators, especially cloud migration and modernization, I would welcome the opportunity to chat. We can dig into Virtusa’s offerings and then set up a more detailed discussion following the event.

This year, Virtusa’s theme at the event is Ideate. Accelerate. Optimize. Can you touch on how the idea of acceleration aligns with the cloud migration journey?

My team is focused on the acceleration piece. We are looking at two sides of the acceleration journey: to hasten the time taken to deploy and provision the environments across three aspects: foundation, migration, and modernization. The second is to ensure that we do it securely and that there are no inconsistencies across deployment teams.

We see clients who have started the migration journey but have hit a roadblock as they take extra time to modernize along the way instead of simply lifting and shifting to the cloud. Our strategy is to get customers onto the cloud quickly, with as few changes as possible to accelerate the journey. Then, as a second phase, we start modernizing the applications based on priorities and the criticalities of the applications. We then assess how to bring them up to an enterprise and production-ready state. Again, it is more about moving to the cloud quickly and then modernizing bit by bit later. We develop a road map and show customers the return as early as possible during that assessment phase. Then we do a much more detailed business case with some sample migrations to showcase the experience. We start looking at what type of things we want to apply before we start full-fledged migration.

What are you most looking forward to at AWS re:Invent?

As one of the first large-scale in-person events since the pandemic, I’m confident that AWS has taken all the preventative measures to keep attendees as safe as possible. With that in mind, I look forward to two things that generally happen at re:Invent: learning a lot and meeting many great people. The announcements and product launches are always exciting, and it brings the industry significant momentum to close out the year.
